“Nacths am Bahnhof”, 40 x 60 cm, 2024, Oil on canvas
In this painting by David Monllor we see a snow-covered street amongst a few buildings. The street is seemingly empty apart from the artificial light that breaks the night, and portray this night scene in a otherwordly way. The artist uses light and colors to penetrate the visible in order to bring the invisible to life. The nighttime in Monllor’s oeuvre symbolises, in a metaphorical sense, the unconscious hidden in the interstices. It feels as though the scene he depicts resembles a still from a movie that never existed, snapshot moments frozen in time. The viewer is drawn into a dramatic and enigmatic scenario that appears devoid of human presence. But ultimately, David Monllor’s theme is always us human beings, reflected back onto ourselves as we consider his paintings. The artwork includes a black wooden frame.
