Mathilde Staal Borup

Mathilde Staal Borup (b. 1991, Denmark) is a Danish visual artist whose practice is rooted in ceramic sculpture. Her works often take on an organic expression, engaging our tactile senses through their intriguing textures and forms. Borup draws inspiration from moments of transition where something abandons its previous state to become something new. She conceives of these transitional states as both raw and vulnerable, driven by hope and suspended between disruption and renewal.

Borup finds herself at ease in the space between chaos and calm. It is within this dynamic tension that her creative energy thrives. The intensity of the process fuels her work, while moments of stillness allow it to fully settle and resonate. Her process is guided by intuition, surrendering to both the materials and the rhythm of creation, letting the process itself dictate direction and form.

Clay occupies a central position in Borup’s practice, a medium she characterizes as simultaneously collaborative and resistant. As the artist notes, “One moment it cooperates, the next, it opposes you”. It is precisely within this instability that intuition and energy can unfold their true potential. For Borup, this loss of control is essential, as she finds it the only way something genuine can emerge.

Borup’s work extends beyond self-expression to explore shared sensory and emotional experience. She seeks to spark curiosity, a curiosity deeply tied to the tactility of her sculptures. The organic forms of her works invite touch and exploration, urging the viewer to sense and discover them. Through this physical and emotional interaction, Borup’s works reveal their layered dualities and ambiguities, qualities that make them endlessly discoverable.
