Zdenek Konvalina
Zdenek Konvalina (b. 1979, CZ) paints visual brushstrokes on a blurred, spray-painted background, resembling “shadows” from the foreground that are the brushstrokes.
Although he holds a BFA from Brno Conservatory, he has a background as a professional ballet dancer; he has transitioned from performing arts to visual arts, which he views as a continuous journey. His work is still deeply rooted in theatre, music, and dance, which continues to inspire his creative expression. He describes theatre as his heritage and views his visual art as a way of continuing this relationship from a different perspective. His paintings are heavily influenced by movement and the multifaceted perspectives of theatre. He approaches his art conceptually and analytically. The energy of a movement, its origin, and where it flows are central ideas in his work, as is the viewpoint of the observer. In a sense, his paintings embody the energy and motion of the stage while continuing his experience as a dancer in a visual and imaginative form.
Zdenek Konvalina is a distinguished artist with an expansive international portfolio, spanning solo exhibitions, group shows, and art fair presentations. Recent highlights include showcasing his work at the prestigious Art Central Art Fair during Hong Kong Art Basel Week 2024, and group presentations at Art021 Shanghai and KIAF Art Fair Seoul in collaboration with leading galleries. In Europe, his solo shows at Benoni Galleri in Copenhagen (2023) and Cova Gallery in Eindhoven (2023) have solidified his reputation as a versatile and evocative contemporary artist. His ongoing Prima Nova II exhibitions at Circle Culture Gallery in Berlin and Hamburg further exemplify his dynamic presence in the art world.
