Painting "Brick Scheme" by German emerging artist Marlon Bellet

“Brick Scheme”, 88 x 59 cm, 2025, Ink on canvas

In "Brick Scheme," Marlon Bellet constructs a surreal and layered narrative through the metaphor of the brick wall. The composition is dominated by a repetitive brick pattern, morphing into humanoid forms, hands, and architectural elements. The figures, built from the same material as their environment, suggest themes of confinement, isolation, and the constant activity surrounding us in big cities. At the top of the image, prison bars under a blue sky evoke a stark contrast between freedom and captivity. The gesture of two brick-patterned hands almost touching - reminiscent of Michelangelo’s "Creation of Adam" - hints at a distorted hope or a futile reaching for connection within isolating systems. By exploring the claustrophobic feeling resulting from the predominant brick walls that cover the hulking buildings surrounding us, Bellet is creating this never-ending landscape, which constitutes big cities.
