Sobekcis
Growing up, the twin brothers Ivan and Nikola Gajic (b. 1991, Belgrade) spent countless hours creating, experimenting, and developing their visual language side by side. Over time, their individual artistic interests naturally evolved into the collaborative practice under the pseudonym Sobekcis. What began as a shared passion has developed into a long-term artistic partnership.
Their background in graffiti has had a significant impact on the way they approach color, gesture, and composition. Working in public spaces and developing a visual language through writing and painting outdoors gave them a sensitivity that would likely have been very different had they followed a different path into the arts.
Their inspirations stem from both being on the go and exploring the world, meeting other artists, but can also come from quieter moments through research, experimenting with new techniques and approaches, and exchanging ideas between the two of them.
Their collaborative exchange is an essential part of their creative process and often leads to unexpected results through shared intuition and dialogue.
Apart from graffiti being a heavy influence on how they work, they also draw inspiration from the work of abstract artists, particularly those associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York, as well as the abstract modernist monuments of the former Yugoslavia. These influences resonate with them on both a visual and personal level, connecting their work to a broader artistic and cultural heritage.
