Browsing, 30 x 24 cm, 2024, Acrylic and wall paint on canvas
The artwork “Browsing” depicts a complex interplay of layered motifs. In the foreground, the outlines of a snake and a scorpion - recurring symbols in Abel Kabel’s work - emerge, their forms resting against a backdrop of luring yellow eyes that contrast the dark surroundings. As is characteristic of Kabel’s work, there are small bits of text incorporated in the painting, here “xvideos” and “pics of jesus”. These seemingly disjointed elements, together with the title “Browsing” hint at online experiences of drifting aimlessly through the web, encountering a mix of the mundane, the provocative, and the unexpected.
