Chessboard, 40 x 32 cm, 2025, Acrylic and chess pieces on wood
In “Chessboard”, Johannes Ehemann distorts a familiar symbol of structure, logic, and control. The classic black-and-white grid is no longer flat and orderly - it twists and crumples, defying its rigidity. The chess pieces remain in formation, yet the ground they stand on is unstable. This transformation raises questions: What happens when the frameworks we rely on begin to shift? Can strategy exist without a solid foundation? With this piece, Ehemann explores the fragility of systems and how even the most structured games are vulnerable to disruption.
The sculptural painting is playable.
