“Mittragen”, 18 x 13 x 8 cm, Clay, fired and glazed, 2025

The German word Mittragen translates as “to contribute,” yet its meaning is layered. It also literally means “to carry with.” This duality hovers within the work: to carry can be an act of support, of sharing a weight, of uplifting. But it can also mean bearing a burden, dragging something that cannot be set down.

The sculpture embodies this tension in its form. A figure stands both strong and vulnerable, its limbs transformed into hands that grasp, hold, and steady. The body appears at once grounded and encumbered, suggesting the ambivalence of shared responsibility.

Mittragen asks us to reflect on what it means to carry with others, the tenderness of holding, the heaviness of obligation, and the inescapable intertwining of both.
