Malwine Stauss
“Stacheling”, 18 x 16 x 4 cm, Clay, fired and glazed, 2025
Described by Malwine Stauss as “a sweet, spiky, human-butterfly,” Stacheling unfolds like a tender paradox. Cast in rich, glossy ceramic, the creature’s form hovers somewhere between insect and human, myth and memory. At first glance, its sweeping, wing-like shapes appear spiky or defensive, but those "spikes" soften into limbs. They extend outward not to push away, but to embrace.
There’s a quiet generosity in this gesture. The central figure anchors the swirling motion of the body. Its outstretched arms blur the line between protection and vulnerability, suggesting that transformation can be both fierce and full of care.
Stacheling offers a sincere meditation on hybridity and tenderness. It is a creature not meant to be understood fully, but to be felt, welcoming us with open arms, even in its strangeness.
