“Ursel”, 28 x 19 x 10 cm, Clay, fired and glazed, 2025

In these ceramic sculptures, the artist merges personal mythology with fiction, creating figures that operate as both objects and guardians. The works are informed by Ursula K. Le Guin’s literary explorations of other worlds and alternative social systems, and her attention to balance, relationality, and transformation.

The choice of the name “Ursula” (short form; Ursel), shared by both of the artist’s grandmothers, introduces a spiritual and ancestral dimension. The sculptures can thus be read as embodiments of a protective, feminine energy, positioned between the domestic and the cosmic.

Their exaggerated, almost amorphous bodies recall clay as a primal material, evoking ideas of creation myths and earth-bound deities, while their upright, watchful postures suggest vigilance and care. Through this fusion of science fiction references, personal genealogy, and spiritual resonance, the works invite viewers to encounter them as sentinels of imagination and inner reflection.
